How Does Cyber Cell Work?

Hello Everyone, Welcome to Lawareness! In this Blog I’m sharing some basic information about Cyber Police Station. I’m fascinated by Cyber World and I never leave any opportunity to learn about it, so now I’m doing my internship at Cyber Police Station, Pune, Maharashtra.

· Types of cyber crime cases tackle by cyber cell:

Cyber Police station investigates each and every cyber crime i.e. any crime related to technology. Cyber Police Station (only Pune city) files 100-150 complaints daily and sometimes more than 150. Most common frauds are: Matrimonial frauds, Job fraud, Fake social media accounts and hacking, sexual harassment, money fraud including card cloning, OTP sharing, MIM (Man in Middle), OLX etc.

· How does cyber cell work?

Cyber Cell, Pune set up 5 units to tackle cyber crime cases.

Unit 1. Hacking/Data Theft

Unit 2. Online Business Fraud

Unit 3. Cheating Fraud

Unit 4. Social Media

Unit 5. ATM Fraud

Once you lodge your complaint, SHO (Station House Officer) check your complaint and send it to that particular unit. You have to attach all digital evidences related to the crime i.e. accused details if any, screenshots of transaction, particular chats, Facebook/instagram URL etc.

What people think is, Cyber Police can delete Any post or account directly from social media. AND THIS IS NOT TRUE

If you want to delete any post/account from Facebook or other social media then you have to give a complaint in Cyber Police Station with URL of the post/account. Then cyber police will send your application to the headquarters of Facebook/instagram/telegram/youtube/twitter etc. It takes some time to get a reply from social media. After getting an email from Cyber Police u/s 91 of CrPC, They send all the details of the accused i.e. social media account details and IP addresses. And then cyber police work on those IP addresses and track down the criminal. In cases like sexual harassment via phone calls or messages and money fraud, Cyber Police contact to the Bank and ISP or SIM Card Company for accused details.

· Cyber Forensics

Cyber/computer forensics is the application of investigation and analysis techniques to gather and preserve evidence from a particular computing device in a way that is suitable for presentation in a court of law.

Cyber Forensics is also known as Network Forensics and it deals with analysis of digital or electronic evidence that is distributed across the large computer network. The main object of cyber forensics is discovery of evidence and assessment of the intent and identity of the perpetrator and to determine potential impact of criminal activity on the victim. This technique helps to find out whether the pertinent information has been destroyed, modified or hidden deliberately, intentionally or incidentally with a view to causing harm to the victim.

Forensic attendance is needed for finding out as to exactly what data was stored in a computer at the relevant time. There are many types of information in a computer that are valuable from the point of evidence, which can be traced or found out through forensic procedure. The main among them include normal files, deleted files, hidden files, and password protected information; file slack, drive slack space etc. The Forensic method of examination of data stored in a computer is to ensure that the original evidence is not tampered.
